One
of four top 20 selections from last year's NAB AFL Draft to gain a
nomination this year, the Taswegian entered 2006 having been a
highly-credentialed under-age footballer. Although it was just his
first AFL-listed season, Birchall became a permanent member of the side
- particularly in the second half of the year, when he was among
Hawthorn's best on several occasions. From round 12, Birchall remained
in the side for the rest and his best effort was a brilliant
36-disposal performance against Geelong in round 22. He is one of
Hawthorn's key youngsters set to shape the club's future.
