Round 8 - Ashley Sampi
After making his AFL debut in round 14 last year, Ashley Sampi finished
the season with four games before establishing himself as a key member
of the West Coast forward line in 2003. The exciting youngster was
snapped up by the Eagles at number six in the 2001 National AFL Draft.
He captained the Under-17 Australian side in the first test against
Ireland in 2001. Sampi played 20 games this year for 31 goals and is
second to Phil Matera in the club’s goal-kicking. He received his
nomination in round eight when he chipped in with two goals and 17
disposals during West Coast’s win over Collingwood. Sampi finished
sixth in the Rising Star voting on four votes.
